Summary

Preserve + Persevere examines our world through the lens of food — learning from past generations, and applying their wisdom to propose a future where sovereignty, sustainability and security inform a new food system. A research project and manifesto form the basis for both an educational magazine and an application concept: each promoting a more sustainable relationship with food.

Significant research into food systems, poverty and supply-chain resilience underpins a manifesto for the project.

Magazine

An accessible, editorial style magazine is chosen as a vehicle to easily distribute the concept and rally the cause.

Internal spreads aim to provide a mix of conversation, practical information and educative content around the main issues.

An internal pull-out is devoted to another aspect of the project — a concept for an app which aims to make freezer space a weapon in the fight against food waste.

App Concept

The Preserve+ app allows users to create a catalogue of browsable, branded meals — homemade dishes which are frozen and ready to be eaten. Meals are created, recorded and managed from within the app and QR coded labels are automatically generated for each batch of food. Meals are frozen in batches and entered into the database and can then be browsed from the app — available dishes, storage location, meal prep time and serving suggestions are included with step-by-step instruction.

The pandemic meant our final-year degree show couldn’t go ahead. But an outdoor exhibition of work allowed us to show off a little!
