Challenge

Exploring the devastating impact of natural disasters on impoverished communities, this project uses expressive typography, poetry and form to bring meaning to the words and sentiments of survivors.

A concrete and metal-grilled container embodies the raw and exposed buildings which often remain following natural disasters.

Typeface

Distressed letterforms are created through analogue techniques and incorporated into the typographic compositions. Themes of loss and fear, silence and despair are considered with the poetry of the compositions — much of which derives from real news reports surrounding past disasters.

A hand-bound type specimen contains spreads of poetry and examples of the letterforms.
